About Devon Brook Span Cottage
In Britain there is a centuries old tradition of building small dwellings on or near bridges as a means of collecting a toll. If a bridge were large enough, a tax would be levied to all those sailing beneath as well as those passing on top. Of course, the most famous, occupied bridge in the country was London Bridge which existed for centuries. Not only was the bridge a source of revenue to the city of London, it was wide enough to be a bustling street which boasted hundreds of dwellings and businesses. At one time or another, some of the most respected jewelers, hat makers and goldsmiths resided there. Our little Brook Span Cottage is a more modest abode, long since dropping its toll above the meandering river Exe.
