About Royal Mail, Devon
In 1516 Henry Vlll created the office of Master of the Post established to move royal documents around the country. By the 1700's the post had continued to evolve to systematize the logistics of mail and was of some use to the upper classes. Not until the Victorian Age was a universal stamp available to all subjects. The "Penny Black" revolutionized mail for the common man and greatly increased the volume of mail to be moved. To this end, the Royal Mail built rail cars and contracted with ship builders to lease space for mail traveling abroad. The prefix of "RMS" was added to many ships owned by both the White Star Line and Cunard. Perhaps the most famous ship bearing the post office prefix was the RMS Titanic. To hold more modest amounts of letters, the Victorians created the red "Pillar Box" which we see on our Royal Post.

What food could be more associated with British afternoons than rich, thick cream? Whether baked into, poured over or slathered on, cream has been king and continues still. Today, there are no fewer than 9 legal categories described by process and butterfat. While some version of afternoon tea, for the gentry, has existed since the 11th century, the more modern offering hails from Devon where the cows produce a quality of milk and cream still envied. The Devonshire Creamery is our tribute to this delicious food and the proud farmers who bring it to market.

About Devon Brook Span Cottage
In Britain there is a centuries old tradition of building small dwellings on or near bridges as a means of collecting a toll. If a bridge were large enough, a tax would be levied to all those sailing beneath as well as those passing on top. Of course, the most famous, occupied bridge in the country was London Bridge which existed for centuries. Not only was the bridge a source of revenue to the city of London, it was wide enough to be a bustling street which boasted hundreds of dwellings and businesses. At one time or another, some of the most respected jewelers, hat makers and goldsmiths resided there. Our little Brook Span Cottage is a more modest abode, long since dropping its toll above the meandering river Exe.
