Cricket games during the 1800’s would often result in a request that the umpire inspect the ball for any defects that might give the opponent an advantage.
Images of many historic English Cricket clubhouses provided the inspiration for this charming design. The sporty green siding is offset by the bright red curtains. Members can relax on the front porch or view the game from the upper balcony window
This acrylic blanket of artifical snow rolls out easily to complete any winter scene. The piece measure 24 inches by 60 inches and a fluffy 1 inch thick. Can easily be cut to customize your scene. Apply 'Real Plastic Snow - item 56.49981' over the top to create the most realistic effect.
I needed a new snow blanket for my Department 56 New England Village. The 2 blankets combined worked out perfectly and the clean, white snow set off the village perfectly.

This adorable cottage recalls the historic coastal homes where city dwellers would spend holidays. To keep thatching in place, weights would be tied to the corners of the roof-line. A simple pine sprig wrapped in ribbon on the door and a charming blue-bird provide a welcome to visitors.
Hanging selections entice shoppers from the street. Fine cuts of pork and ham were often a holiday treat for the common-folk in London. Wood lies stacked to fuel the attached smoke house.
The products I ordered were excellent. You can’t expect anything less from Dept. 56. It was a pleasure doing business with you and I hope to continue in the future.
There is hardly a more picturesque sight than that of an old mill. Indeed some of England's greatest painters have chosen mills as subjects. Using water or wind to harness energy is an ancient notion and the streams and rivers of Britain have been driving mill wheels for thousands of years. Early on mills were small, local businesses grinding corn or flour or flax. As industry grew, the Victorians built more and greater mills to drive the machinery of growth. Large mills powered enormous equipment that sawed or ground or lifted huge hammers to card cotton or full wool. By the end of the 19th century, there were 20,000 mills in England. Before the zenith of the Industrial Revolution, on a dusty village road, the miller at Brandon Mill ground corn for his neighbors.
A nod to the gatherings held at the Department 56 headquarters during the holidays, when servers would pass trays of the most wonderful hors d'oeuvres – caramelized bacon strips.
Many beautiful details enhance this new costermonger or street seller. Dressed in fine custom, our lady offers tea from decorated urns. Note the detailed signage referencing the history of afternoon tea, when Anna, Duchess of Bedford, requested tea in the afternoon, served with cakes, sweets, and “Sandwiches”, stuffed slices of bread coined by the Earl of Sandwich.
Beer is the oldest fermented beverage known and has been made the world over for millennia. For centuries it was not safe to drink water in developed areas and so beer, wine, mead and the like were drunk by all at each meal. This would have been true of the poor and wealthy alike. It is said that Queen Elizabeth l liked ale for breakfast accompanied by eggs and mushrooms with sugar. The poor didn't have sugar but they had alcoholic beverages by the score. In 1830 The Beerhouse Act was installed to regulate all producers. By 1841 there were over 45,000 licensed brewers in the country; some large, some small. Chiswick would have been a neighborhood beer maker serving the public houses nearby. Chiswick is the area of London and home to one of England’s largest and oldest brewery, Fuller’s Griffin Brewery, producing some of the best known and respected brands of Britian.

In Britain there is a centuries old tradition of building small dwellings on or near bridges as a means of collecting a toll. If a bridge were large enough, a tax would be levied to all those sailing beneath as well as those passing on top. Of course, the most famous, occupied bridge in the country was London Bridge which existed for centuries. Not only was the bridge a source of revenue to the city of London, it was wide enough to be a bustling street which boasted hundreds of dwellings and businesses. At one time or another, some of the most respected jewelers, hat makers and goldsmiths resided there. Our little Brook Span Cottage is a more modest abode, long since dropping its toll above the meandering river Exe.
What food could be more associated with British afternoons than rich, thick cream? Whether baked into, poured over or slathered on, cream has been king and continues still. Today, there are no fewer than 9 legal categories described by process and butterfat. While some version of afternoon tea, for the gentry, has existed since the 11th century, the more modern offering hails from Devon where the cows produce a quality of milk and cream still envied. The Devonshire Creamery is our tribute to this delicious food and the proud farmers who bring it to market.

Can you imagine life without sponges? Historically, sponges came from the sea and most from the Mediterranean. In the middle of the Victorian age, sponges were found off the coast of Florida and harvested in great numbers for use in Europe. Tarpon Springs and areas near the Bahamas became the world exporter of sponges. They were hooked from the bottom with long-handled rakes, dried, beaten clean and bleached. This harvest, done by hand, insured that the sponge beds would continue to produce. Sponges of all sizes were in great demand for household use, in baths and kitchens but they were also widely used in surgery and had industrial uses insulating certain kinds of machinery. British pottery factories used sponges by the ton to create the smooth edges of dishes and bowls and pitchers.

Florence Nightingale is most remembered as a pioneer of nursing and a reformer of hospital sanitation methods. Her two greatest life achievements; pioneering of nursing and the reform of hospitals were amazing considering that most Victorian women of her age group did not attend universities or pursue professional careers. It was her father, William Nightingale, who believed women, should get an education.
