Willow Tree hand-carved sculptures speak in quiet ways to heal, comfort, protect and inspire. Susan Lordi identifies emotions so important for us to convey, and renders them in simple, pure gestures. About Willow Tree, Susan says, "I try to keep the interpretation of Willow Tree open. I hope this makes it more personal, and allows the viewer to decide its meaning."

Dammit, I tried to write a comment and it got zapped before I could finish. The directions are not that clear as to the box I should be writing it. I tried to do it on both boxes below. Wonder if I am the only one who is confused and quits! Okay - I ordered one for a friend whose husband (non religious) who has undergone 4 months of horrible pain from treatment for cancer of the tongue. She brought it to him in the hospital when I received it. He asked her to put it on his tray and kept it near him the entire time. She was so surprised!!!

Brother was originally carved in #2001, and then discontinued several years later. In response to consumer requests for more boy pieces, it was re-introduced in summer. This playful push-pull pose between two brothers will be very familiar to parents of boys; it reflects the relationships that develop in childhood and endure through adulthood.

Child of My Heart Child of my Heart is a tall figurine of a woman holding a young child in her arms. The subtle implication of different hair and skin color is that the mother and child are not related by blood. The reference to adoption does not prevent his piece from being meaningful for any parent and child. As with all of Susan’s sculptures, the piece is totally open to interpretation. The child could have been adopted, or the woman could be the child’s caregiver, godparent, birth mother, etc., but regardless, they share a strong love and bond. This piece was inspired by a good friend of Susan’s who is very involved with adoptions from Asia. The sentiment for the piece is actually a love poem to a child.
My Mother just loved it. She called me and cried because she was sooo happy.

I sculpted the first Angel of courage in 2001 to celebrate the triumphant spirit, inspiration and courage we call upon to face challenges in our lives – whether they be our health or the well-being of our loved ones. In response to an overwhelming request for this sentiment, I re-sculpted Courage for 2006. I hope this figure can be a reminder of people in our lives who inspire us with their strength and courage everyday. -- Susan Lordi

It is a Christmas gift for my mom. She wanted it last year, but I couldn't find it. So I gave her a different one, she liked the other one, but told me that it wasn't the right one.
I purchased this particular item for my sister's birthday present. I explained to her that it represents the two of us sharing our secrets when we were growing up and now that we have grown, giving each other advice. She loves it.

Heart of Gold was inspired by a young cancer patient at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. His “boundless and positive energy reflected on those around him, and as a result, good things continue to radiate from his spirit. His courageous spirit and kind smile showed me how one little heart of gold can continue to bring so much love, joy and comfort to others. It is my hope that this figurine expresses the pure and honest affection between a child and those who love and care for him.

Together, our family is home
I wanted to capture the time in your life when there’s a lot of excitement, happiness, yet a big unknown. This piece connects the concepts of Home and Family — you are creating your own family — your own home. There’s been a shift in your life cycle. It’s about establishing roots in a way that centers and grounds you as a couple. It can be scary, but also has you in awe. Together, you’re creating a sense of place — building something — permanence and belonging. To each other and to the someone else that you haven’t met yet, but that you already love. I wanted the title to have a hidden layer of discovery ... I like the twist of taking a noun and using it as an adjective to explain a feeling one might have, but can’t always verbally express.

A field of lavender never fails to take my breath away. You experience lavender through all your senses – not only its aromatic fragrance, but its pure visual beauty... its form is uplifting, and the color is gorgeous. In any garden, it’s a standout. It even tastes good! Speaking as a gardener, lavender is just good for the soul – and so, it heals. I wanted this piece to be a healing piece. But it also could be seen as a piece about strength. She’s looking up; her stance is strong and uplifted, like lavender. I named her Lavender Grace... perhaps she could remind you of someone who exemplifies a life of beauty and grace.
I love Willow Tree. I first saw them in the gift shop of the hospital where I work. When my daughter was studying for finals in college, I purchased one where the angel is holding books. My daughter loved it. She is now in her own apartment, thus the Mi Casa, and I have started a collection for her. However, there is one thing I have been looking for. Is there specific shelving available for these angels?

Now in its eighth year, Willow Tree? continues to grow, attracting new and familiar customers with expressive art forms that communicate beyond words. Susan Lordi hand carves each original figure. Using family and friends as models, Susan tries to capture a moment in time or express a feeling. I want to create a pure form that speaks through gesture. Willow Tree isn't so much about the tangible piece. It represents an emotion, or it marks a memory.
