Anniversary celebrates the constancy of love. It’s intended for lifelong partners who continue to express their love for each other through the years. The older couple appears to “fit together” comfortably. Susan sculpted this piece using her parents as models. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in #2007. The poetic inscription and carving on the back is a lovely discovery which makes the piece more intimate for both giver and receiver.

Child of My Heart Child of my Heart is a tall figurine of a woman holding a young child in her arms. The subtle implication of different hair and skin color is that the mother and child are not related by blood. The reference to adoption does not prevent his piece from being meaningful for any parent and child. As with all of Susan’s sculptures, the piece is totally open to interpretation. The child could have been adopted, or the woman could be the child’s caregiver, godparent, birth mother, etc., but regardless, they share a strong love and bond. This piece was inspired by a good friend of Susan’s who is very involved with adoptions from Asia. The sentiment for the piece is actually a love poem to a child.

It is a Christmas gift for my mom. She wanted it last year, but I couldn't find it. So I gave her a different one, she liked the other one, but told me that it wasn't the right one.

The idea for Peach on Earth was formulating as our country was making plans to go to war. In a way, it was my response. It’s not about celestial peace, but peace on earth among men – what we need to contemplate now. I gave her dress a very earthy color to ‘ground’ it. The Dancer is about creativity. The sentiment refers to the fact that everything we create starts with a little idea – and a lot of times we get these ideas in quiet moments of inner reflections. I wanted to give credit to moments of daydreaming that are seemingly unproductive, but from which spurts of creativity arise. We are quick to reward action and work – the process of doing. But a lot of creativity sparks from seemingly inactive moments, so it is important to take the time to daydream, imagine, and get excited about possibilities. It’s about giving yourself permission to quietly sit and think – these moments are to be valued. This piece is about celebration of creativity, in all its shapes and forms.

I was thinking about metaphors of quilts. A lot about protection. A quilt makes us feel safe and warm. The rows of even stitching showing the passing of time, a meditative rhythm — like quieting and rocking a child. It takes time and patience. I wanted the quilt and the rocking to be one. The sentiment reveals this rhythm also — lullabies don’t have to make literal sense ... but the cadence of the words is lyrical and soothing. The warmth and coziness of a sleeping child — the tender connection — these quiet memories exist in anyone who has ever rocked a child in their arms.
